Place of Hope – Looking Back and Moving Forward

Place of Hope

Looking back…

Micky Enright founded Place of Hope in Cotacachi, Ecuador to address the nutritional and health needs of the city’s poor and neglected indigenous elders.

Since its founding, the program has provided over 75,000 meals and become an integral part of life for hundreds of local residents who, in many cases, have little or no other source of food or medical attention.

As we approach a new decade in 2020, Place of Hope (Lugar de Esperanza) finds itself in a strong organizational position, supported for years by generous donors, local and international, and by a reliable team of caring volunteers who work together to provide over 15,000 meals a year to elderly indigenous guests and others with special needs.

Our program is well known in Cotacachi for its respectful and affectionate attention to the elders, and is highly appreciated by local organizations, communities and barrios.

Moving Forward – Planning for 2020

We’re giving our website a fresh new look for 2020 to help you stay current with the latest news.  Our new home page will give you the updates about Micky as well as an overview of our ongoing activity in our Place of Hope program.

See the Changes Here –>

Micky EnrightMicky Enright, has had to reduce her activity in day-to-day operations due to her health limitations.  As a result, the Board is making organizational adjustments in order to comply with legal and banking requirements, making sure that Micky’s vision for the program continues to guide our efforts.

Going forward, Micky’s title will be Founding President, and she will resume involvement in the program as her health permits.  The Board will continue organizing the necessary governmental paperwork to finalize the legalization of Place of Hope as a foundation in Ecuadorian law.

Program Improvements for 2020

The Board and Volunteer Coordinators have identified a list of possible improvements in the program for 2020, depending on funding and favorable cooperation with local organizations.

  • Possible need to expand the meal services to accommodate additional people, resulting from closure of a local “Hogar de Ancianos” (Elder Home)
  • Expansion of support from Jet Blue, once our legal status as an Ecuadorian foundation is finalized.
  • Liaison with local schools and service organizations to distribute/sell donated items
  • Improved irrigation for the cornfields
  • Possible organization of shelter housing for homeless elders
